Dell East Music Business Institute Now Underway
Now in its seventh
year, classes are currently forming for the Fall 2007 semester of the
Dell East Music Business Institute (DEMBI). This year the Institute
is under the dynamic leadership of Dee Wellmon, noted music business
professor and entrepreneur. Wellmon has been affiliated and
instructed at DEMBI since its inception in 1999, this is a fitting
task for her and a treat for all of her past and future students. The
students at DEMBI range in age between 17 yrs and 60 yrs with an
average age of 28 years. Warren Haskins, founder says quite
frequently, “Our students have one leg in the ‘Post Office’ and one
leg in the music industry.
Classes will run from
Monday, September 17th through Thursday, October 25th, and
a total of 16 courses are being offered. Enrollment is limited and
slots in each course are filled on a first come, first served basis.
Advance registration is currently underway, and will continue through
Friday, September 13th.
DEMBI, an educational
initiative created by the Philadelphia Department of Recreation's Dell
East and the Family of the Dell East, Inc., its volunteer advisory
council, aims to expose, educate and train seriously interested
students about key aspects of the music and entertainment business.
All DEMBI classes will
be held from 6:30 PM-8:30 PM on Monday and Thursday evenings in the
Stage Building of the Dell East, located at Ridge Avenue and
Huntingdon Drive near 33rd Street in Philly's East Fairmount Park.
The DEMBI curriculum
is designed to concentrate on the business, marketing and technical
aspects of the live entertainment industry. With 16 different courses,
DEMBI's education component will consist of an six week series of
courses in the areas of event production, artist relations, studio
production and concert promotion. As in previous semesters, all
classes will be taught by recognized experts and top professionals
within the music, entertainment and media industries.
Since its
establishment in 1999, more than 500 students have enrolled in various
DEMBI classes. Several students have attended in more than one
semester, and at least three dozen students have taken advantage of
net-working opportunities to land internships, jobs or contracts with
the firms or organizations of various instructors and other students.
As an indication of how badly students want and need the knowledge
being dispensed, students have come from as far away as Baltimore,
Maryland and Orange, New Jersey.
A partial list of
esteemed industry professionals who continue to serve as DEMBI faculty
members include: Warren Haskins, veteran concert producer and
Off-Broadway publicist; songwriting and producing partners Carvin
Haggins and Ivan Barias of Karma Productions; Dee Wellmon, a longtime
record industry marketing and artist development guru; Walt Reeder,
Jr., a second generation talent booking agent and artist manager;
James Elam, IV, a well known and respected entertainment lawyer; Al
Hunter, Jr., a longtime entertainment columnist for the Philadelphia
Daily News; Bob Lott, a veteran film and video producer and
participant in the Black Music Association's "Business of Music"
workshops in the 1980s.
The Institute is
designed to provide a wealth of knowledge not easily found or
disseminated in any other local institutional setting. Classes will
be held on site at the Dell East on Monday and Thursday evenings from
September 17th through October 25th. The program is
intended to be the perfect learning and networking opportunity for all
current and aspiring musicians, songwriters, poets, authors, lighting
and sound technicians, attorneys, managers, promoters, publicists,
entertainment marketers and other related disciplines to learn
critical information needed to thrive and survive in the entertainment
business. Acceptance for enrollment into any course is contingent
upon determination of a student's earnest desire to learn, and
submission of an enrollment form and tuition fee. The cost is $50 per
course.
